How to Save Water This Summer
/Did You Know?
Summer is here (almost) and that means it’s time for manicured lawns and blooming vegetation. Did you know that as much as 50% of outdoor water consumption is wasted due to poor watering methods?
Here are some tips on how YOU can save water this summer (this is not only good for the environment but your pocket book):
Water your lawn or garden during the coolest part of the day (early morning is best).
Set sprinklers to water only the lawn or garden – not the street, house, or sidewalk (Such an easy tip, but I know I have been guilty of this from time to time).
Collect rain water in a rain barrel and use it to water your garden.
Keep shrubs, trees, and garden plants mulched to reduce moisture loss from soil surface. Pine straw mulch is best; avoid cypress mulch as it is not as good at allowing in new moisture.
Looking to add or replace vegetation in your yard? Choose native plants!
Add a rain garden in your yard!! A rain garden is comprised of native shrubs, perennials and flowers planted in a small depression. It is designed to temporarily hold and soak in rain water runoff.
Plant more vegetation to reduce the amount of lawn you have.
I hope these tips help YOU save water and $$.
